The story behind a photo

England flagThe backstage of my favorite collection of old photos.

I don’t remember the last time I looked at the old photo boxes, which is in my house. After I bought my first digital camera around ten years ago, I forgot my old pictures on paper. Now they’re forgotten, rotting anywhere on the top of my wardrobe. However I really like those photos and, because of this, I’m scanning my family’s old photos to my computer this weekend.

I only just found an ancient and odd photo collection which is about 30 years old. I love these pictures, but I didn’t even remember that they still existed! The whole collection has ten black and white photos, which show me and my mother together 30 years ago. So I was a little baby and my mother was a very young woman.

One of my favorite photos. =D

Although the photos are very damaged, with tears and yellow stains, they’re still very beautiful. I really like black and white pictures! And this collection is the only one true and original black and white photos which I have, because they were taken with an analog camera, using a traditional black and white film. Therefore the result is very different from current digital images. The contrast between light and shadow is wonderful, you can see hundreds of shades of gray, and the sharpness is absolutely perfect! They really look like works of art.

According to my mother, these photos were taken by a clown! It’s true! At that time, we lived in Brasília and my parents had a friend who was a professional photographer and, in his free time, he worked as a clown in a theater troupe. The clown costume also helped him when he was taking pictures of children, because they usually laugh in front of a clown. Nevertheless, his method didn’t work that day. My mother said that I was scared when I saw the clown and soon I began to cry! Because of this, in nearly all photos I look serious or a little frightened. It’s so funny!

I was afraid, wasn’t I? =O

By the way, the photographed images are very simple, they hadn’t got a very special production, in fact they’re traditional portraits. My mother was wearing an informal dress and I was wearing a kind of jumpsuit. I almost always appear on my mother’s arms, sometimes she was standing, other times she was sitting on the sofa. I was a chubby and cuddly baby, with straight hair and very big black eyes. My mother was a beautiful young woman, 23 or 24 years old, very slim, with stylish short dark hair. How different! It’s strange to realize how the time changes us! If I’d never looked at these photos, maybe I couldn’t recognize myself and my mother in them.

Well, after I scan these pictures to my computer, I’ll correct some imperfections using Photoshop and then I’m going to send them to my mother’s e-mail. I think she’ll get very surprised!
